Gia Lam district, Hanoi has just organized the acceptance test of a trial planting model of yellow pear variety Happy 6. The model was deployed in Yen Khe village, Yen Thuong commune (belonging to the district). The trial area includes 3,600m2 of Happy 6 yellow melons, the control is the indigenous variety of melons that are being widely planted in the locality, and in the provinces and cities nationwide.
As a result, after nearly 3 months from sowing to the end of harvest, Happy 6 yellow melon variety gave superior yield and income, compared to the control variety and rice varieties cultivated in the same season in the area. .
Specifically, the criteria of morphology and economic value of Happy 6 yellow melon are achieved: Cylindrical fruit, 14-15cm long. The average fruit diameter is 7.2cm. The pulp is over 2.3cm thick. The pods are smooth, dark yellow with white stripes. The flesh is firm, creamy white, fragrant, sweet and crispy, not wet and viscous. The average weight is 0.4-0.5kg/fruit. Actual yield is 20.5 tons of fruit/ha.
Selling price of buckets (unsorted) of Happy 6 yellow pears in the field from 28,000 – 32,000 VND/kg. Output value reached 612.5 million VND/ha. The production efficiency increased 4 times compared to the control variety and 12 times higher than the local rice cultivation of the same soil class.
Mr. Nguyen Van Tan, household participating in the model said: I planted 5 sao (1,800m2) Happy 6 yellow pear melon from April to June 2021. The yield is nearly 750kg of fruit/pole (360m2). After balancing revenue and expenditure, the profit reached 12.37 million VND/sao. If including labor, the income is 17.37 million VND/sao. Calculated, 5 sao of melon this spring crop, my family has gained nearly 90 million.
Agreeing with Mr. Tan, Mr. Nguyen Quang Truong further commented: Happy 6 yellow melon plants grow very well, have thick green leaves, are durable, and have good resistance to late blight and powdery mildew. Especially resistant to heat very well, not infected with viral diseases. At the same time of growth, the yellow melon variety Happy 6 gives 2 times higher yield than the local variety grown in the same season. The fruit has a long shelf life under natural conditions.
After researching, we learned that, in order to achieve the above-mentioned unexpected results, the households participating in the model strictly followed the VietGAP vegetable growing process, including: Choosing high nutrient-rich and humus-rich fields. With active irrigation, the melon growing area is not affected by pollutants, such as industrial wastewater, hospitals, cities and industrial dust…
In order to save seeds, households have planted seeds in pots, then planted in production fields. The land is plowed, harrowed, made into small beds, 1.8m wide, 30cm high, 30cm trench. After treating the bed surface with Trichoderma, use agricultural film to cover the bed and plant a hole in the middle of the bed. Distance, tree x tree = 45cm. Planting density is 450 plants/pole.
Fertilizers include, decomposed animal manure 1,000kg, potassium chloride 6kg, urea 8kg, phosphorus 20kg. In which: Fertilize all manure and phosphate fertilizers + 20% of nitrogen + 20% of potassium. The rest divide fertilizer 3 times from the back of the tree to 2-3 true leaves.
Care: Maintain garden humidity 70-75% of the field’s moisture retention capacity. Pay attention to keep the moisture well during the flowering, fruiting and large fruiting period. When the melon plant has 4-5 true leaves, press the top to stimulate the branch. Then prune to leave only 2 level 1 branches. Female flowers and fruits will appear on level 2 branches.
Hapyy 6 melon can give 6-8 fruits/plant. To ensure good quality fruit, only 4-5 fruits should be left per tree. With the pests and diseases of melon. Priority should be given to the use of drugs of microbiological and herbal origin. When pests and diseases exceed the economic threshold, only specific chemical drugs on the list allowed by the state will be used.
Ms. Hoang Thi Thuy Nga, Deputy Economic Department of Gia Lam district, suggested: The cultivation efficiency of yellow pear variety Happy 6 has been clear. The People’s Committees and Agricultural Service Cooperatives of the communes need to quickly introduce this melon variety into the local seasonal structure in order to exploit the potential advantages of the land, climate and the capital market. Thereby, helping to increase the income for farmers in the area.
